TELUS International Europe invests USD$60,000 to renovate the Prof. Dr. Decho Denev school for children with hearing impairment in Sofia
Sofia, Bulgaria – The sixth TELUS Days of Giving in Bulgaria was held today at the Prof. Dr. Decho Denev school for children with hearing impairment in Sofia. More than 700 TELUS International Europe team members from Sofia and Plovdiv renovated the dormitory, play area and school yard.
‘’We’re here today to give with our hearts and our hands in support of the more than 120,000 Bulgarians who are hearing impaired. While we can’t make all of the societal changes that are necessary during our time here, we can raise awareness about the need for change and hopefully inspire others to volunteer for such a worthy cause,’’ said Jeffrey Puritt, President and CEO of TELUS International.
The USD$60,000 project is part of TELUS’ annual global volunteer campaign, better known as the TELUS Days of Giving, in which thousands of TELUS International team members from around the world showcase their commitment to “give where we live”. The initiative has been conducted in Bulgaria since 2013. Over the years, the company’s efforts have focused on the overall renovation of the school for visually impaired children Louis Braille in Sofia and renovation of the Complex for Social Services for Children and Families in Plovdiv.
This year, the TELUS Days of Giving activity supports people with hearing impairment in Bulgaria. In May, TELUS International hosted TELUS Days of Giving in Plovdiv, where more than 250 volunteers joined together to renovate the specialized Prof. Dr. Stoyan Belinov school for children with hearing impairments. Today, the initiative was extended to Sofia where 36 bedrooms, the schoolyard, four play rooms and the corridors of the school were completely renovated. The garden area of the school was also cleaned and the lighting was improved.
“The magic of this event happens thanks to the TELUS International Europe team members. It is because of their volunteer work that we can change the environment we live in. As a company we will continue to support important social causes through TELUS Days of Giving, the Community Board and many other volunteer opportunities,” said Xavier Marcenac, President of TELUS International Europe.
TELUS International partnered with ‘’Listen up” Foundation this year, which is focused on ensuring equal access for people with hearing impairment to social services. ‘’Listen up’’ joined the cause of TELUS Days of Giving by mobilizing more than 100 of their own volunteers in Plovdiv in May and now again in Sofia. They worked tirelessly all day, and shared the beauty of sign language with TELUS volunteers. „According to us, TELUS International Europe is the best example how exactly to take the social responsibility and this happens only through empathy, volunteering and active dialog between all of us. Our participation in TELUS Days of Giving shows that the deaf people can do everything, they just do not hear.”, said Ashod Derandonyan, Chairman of Listen up Foundation.
Through a $13,783 grant in 2015 and 2016, TELUS International Europe supported the development of Listen Up’s new online platform, designed to facilitate equality for people with hearing impairment and support their active participation in their communities. TELUS International Europe is now supporting even more programs like this through the TELUS International Bulgaria Community Board. Beginning in 2017, and every year thereafter, the TELUS International Bulgaria Community Board will devote USD$100,000 exclusively to local Bulgarian charities.
