In this article I want to point your attention to a Bulgarian city with untapped potential for development of the outsourcing sector. This city offers great work-life balance and living conditions in terms of infrastructure, geographical location, culture and education as it is an important economic, transport, cultural and educational center for Bulgaria. I’m referring to Plovdiv, the second-largest city in Bulgaria after the capital Sofia with a population of 341,041 inhabitants.

Plovdiv offers you more than enough reasons to live and work there. Check out our top 5:

    1. Plovdiv is the 6th best tourist destination in the world for 2015

Bulgarian city of Plovdiv has been ranked 6th in a list of the hottest destinations in the world to visit in 2015 which has been announced by esteemed international guidebook publisher Lonely Planet. According to the Lonely Planet’s ranking, Plovdiv is among the top 10 tourist destinations for 2015 after Washington DC, El Chalten, Milan, Zermatt, and Valletta, surpassing cities like Vienna, Shanghai, and Toronto. Lonely Planet’s experts describe Plovdiv as: “One of Europe’s most beautiful Old Towns, a backdrop of the Rhodope Mountains, historical treasures, smoldering nightlife. There’s a wealth of reasons to explore Plovdiv, but recent decades have polished Bulgaria’s second city.” You can check out more about Plovdiv in Lonely Planet here.

    2. Candidate for European Capital of Culture for 2019

The city of Plovdiv is Bulgaria’s choice to become European Capital of Culture 2019. The city is to receive a total of BGN 20 million to implement the program with which it won the competition. Plovdiv is the oldest city in Europe, which has survived through 8 millenniums uniting civilizations, religions and people. It highlights the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe. Plovdiv will be trending in the next couple of years due to the cultural program that it should carry out as a candidate for European Capital of Culture for 2019.

    3. Living conditions – all you need in a city

Plovdiv is one of the major administrative, industrial, transport, educational and tourist centers in the country and one of the fastest growing cities. It has well-developed transport infrastructure including an international airport. Plovdiv has 2 universities, 3 language schools and 10 100 graduates per year. According to surveys, Plovdiv also has a higher quality of life than Sofia. Its multicultural character, vibrant art and culture scene, museums and galleries, design, architecture and dance weeks, the international fair (one of the most important trade events and one of the largest exhibition centers in Southeastern Europe) and summer arts festivals will keep your social calendar full. Plovdiv is a great place to enjoy yourself in more casual ways too, whether by day or by night with variety of bars, pubs and clubs.

    4. Variety of work opportunities

The demographic indicators, the strategic geographic location, the high quality of life, and the well-developed educational system made Plovdiv the second most attractive investment hub in Bulgaria for IT and business process outsourcing. An increasing number of young people remain in the city lured by the good opportunities for career development. “Our city has the potential to open 5,000 new jobs in the field of outsourcing over the next 3 years,” said Plovdiv’s Mayor, Ivan Totev, at the Outsourcing Destination Bulgaria forum held last month in Plovdiv.

We at TELUS International Europe offer variety of job opportunities in the outsourcing sector.
